Star Trek on Saturday Night Live
I know that I've been heavy on the star trek posts this weekend, but here's one more! This was on SNL last night. The stars of Star Trek made a surprise appearance!

I'm on a Boat!
This video came from SNL and has been floating around the net for some time. This is from its Wikipedia page:
"I'm on a Boat" is the third single off The Lonely Island's debut album Incredibad, and was also featured as a Saturday Night Live Digital Short.[1] This song features R&B singer T-Pain. The song is a parody of many rap video cliches. The music video reached number one on YouTube in February 2009 and was number one on the U.S. iTunes music video chart.

The Big Double Feature (Part 2 of 2)
When last we left Joe & Tom, they were in the middle of 2 big summer blockbusters! I know sounds more exciting but I had to start somewhere!
The 2nd movie of our double feature was X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This is the 4th movie in the X-Men series and also a prequel. For those who don't know about Wolverine & his unusual story, here's a brief rundown from Wikipedia:
"X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a 2009 superhero film loosely based on the Marvel Comics' fictional character Wolverine. It was released on April 28, 2009 in the Netherlands and worldwide up to May 1 2009. The film is directed by Gavin Hood and stars Hugh Jackman as the title character. It is a prequel to the X-Men film trilogy and is primarily set roughly ten to seventeen years before the film X-Men. The film focuses on the violent past of mutant Wolverine and his time with Team X, before Wolverine's skeleton was bonded with the indestructible metal adamantium. The plot also details his early encounters with Colonel William Stryker (Danny Huston),[2] the Weapon X program, Wolverine's interactions with other mutants[3] and his complex relationship with his half-brother Victor Creed (Liev Schreiber).[4] The film was mostly shot in Australia and New Zealand."
Now that we're all caught up, how was the movie? It was good. Not great but very good.
It was nice to see the back story and history of this great character. The problem with these movies is too much of a good thing! There are so many characters in the story, it is hard for everyone to have a fair "piece of the pie". What do I mean by that?
Some characters seem to be very important to the story (and therefore get a lot of screentime) & others seem to be left on the side of the road. They leave and you're left at the buffet line, plate in hand saying, "Hey he or she was cool. May I have some more?" Their answer to you is: "No, we have 2 hours to tell a cool story and there are big explosions to get to." So you sit back down and take your serving of summer blockbuster. It's light & cheesy, but still leaves you hungry for more.
Tom (his movie blog, http://thelastreel.blogspot.com/) and I see these type of films and have long discussions about them. Weighing the pros & cons. Good vs bad scenes etc. We often think that these stories might work better as a weekly show on television. That way every one's story could be explored in detail. Will it ever happen? Anything can happen in sci-fi/fantasy! ;)
The Big Double Feature (Part 1 of 2)

We saw 2 movies in one day! The new Star Trek & X-Men movies. We did not plan on a double feature when we started and it was a pleasant surprise to say the least!
We used to go to the movies all the time. Usually on a weekly basis. The rare double feature would come around every now and then. Now if I get out to the movies once a month, it would be a lot!
Enough of the history lesson lets talk movies! Star Trek is first. Full disclosure: regular readers will know that I am a sci-fi fan (geek) with lots of posts of Star Trek, Star Wars & comic posts. To say that I am a fan is an understatement.
That being said, I had high hopes for this new film. I've seen the trailers but stayed away from plot spoilers as much as I could. (Always try to do that with movies I'm really excited for!) The last time there was a Star Trek movie out was 2002's Star Trek Nemesis. The last of the "Next Generation" films. The movie was fair & did poorly at the box office. The historic franchise seemed like it may be over. All Trekkies were bummed to say the least!
When word came out that there was a new film (number 11 for all you keeping track!) in the works, everyone who was a fan seemed to become excited again. A new young cast with a new hip director! The Memorable quote from Star Trek III comes to mind, "Young minds, fresh ideas..."
The movie was to be a reboot/prequel. Geek to English translation: telling the story of Star Trek: The Original Series in a new & different way.
I don't want to spoil the plot for anyone who has not seen it. But it's safe to say that the movie was truly awesome! Everyone in the cast nails their character and makes it their own. (Which is very hard, being that these characters have been around since the 1960's!) Everyone has their moment to shine and the movie needs all of them.
Also it has that certain something that the other Star Trek films seem to be lacking in. That something is hard to pin down, but you know it when it's there & when it's not. Everything in this movie seemed 'more real' if that's possible for a sci-fi film. Everything seemed to really matter. Again without giving too much away, there are events in this movie that fundamentally change the Star Trek universe forever. Which can be good or bad, "...from a certain point of view". But that quote is from another movie....
It is a must see! I cannot recommend it enough. Fans who know the past tv shows and movies will be in their geek glory. Those who don't know Captain Kirk from Luke Skywalker, will also enjoy this introduction to the Star Trek world.
I will stop there and part 2 will pick up later. Part 2 has a guy that really knows how to get his point or points across.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is an upcoming science fiction/action film due for release on June 24, 2009. It is the sequel to 2007's Transformers, which was the first live action Transformers film. Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg return respectively as director and executive producer, while Shia LaBeouf reprises the role of Sam Witwicky, the human caught in the war between Autobots and Decepticons. The film introduces many more robots and the scope has been expanded to numerous countries, the most important of which is Egypt.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra - Trailer
